DIY

The author stands on a short ladder outside in a garden with lots of trees. Her hair is in a bun and she's wearing a tank top and bike shorts. She is using a drill to make pilot holes to install barn-door hardware on a chicken coop door.

DIY or DIE

DIY: (Do It Yourself) means getting your hands dirty and figuring out new things, learning and improving skills, and getting things done. For some it’s an ethic, for others, a matter of necessity. Sometimes it’s both. It can be two things… or twelve.

Whatever your motivation or reasoning, it’s pretty cool to be capable. Don’t outsource your life. Learn how stuff works, how the sausage is made, how to make a nice wine to go with the sausage, and how to be an operator of your life and home. We want to be systems thinkers, tinkerers, and builders, not just helpless passengers or consumers along for the ride.

Some jobs do need an expert, but you’re probably capable of a lot more than you think! Do your research, ask smart questions (even if it means asking silly questions first), and use your judgement… and if everything looks good, dive right in! And if not, even if your research tells you to call in a professional, you still learned more about something new, and that’s neat.
